Nous adorons… Café du Marché

Tucked away in a quiet little side street near Farringdon tube is a fabulous little taste of France, and we were lucky enough to get ourselves a table. Café du Marché is three restaurants under one roof, Le Café, Le Grenier and Le Rendezvous. All of them offer the same level of sophistication and great ambiances, however Le Grenier serves an à la carte menu with frites (chips, to you and me) whereas Le Café offers salads and potatoes.

We walked into Le Café and were presented with a rustic restaurant bustling with life and energy. The restaurant was almost fully booked, but at no point did it feel like it was ‘busy’. We were seated and served immediately and the staff were completely in control and incredibly friendly, so we were relaxed completely from the start.

The quaint candlelit tables created an excellent atmosphere, accompanied by live jazz music – and it was only a Wednesday night! The exposed brick work and beams complimented the open plan ‘café’, with the wooden flooring helped believe we could have actually been in a restaurant in Paris.

Presented with a complimentary glass of champagne as we ordered and given an excellent wine recommendation by one of waiters, we knew we were off to a good start. To start we had two of the specials; French Onion Soup and Grilled Asparagus with Parmesan and cous cous, all of which was made to perfection. The Main courses we had included Red Snapper with red pepper, new potatoes and pesto and a Steak (medium rare) with spinach, new potatoes and onions. The fish was really delicious and the steak was cooked incredibly accurately and exactly to my taste which, in my experience, is not always the case when asking for medium rare!

Dessert followed suit and was so very tasty; the dark and white chocolate mousse was lovely, but when The Gent tasted my Raspberry and Lemon Cheesecake he secretly had pudding envy and ate the entire thing, savouring every perfect bite. We washed the whole thing down with some liqueur and coffees, with a chat from our very friendly french waiter, Dominic.

The prices are more than reasonable for the level of service and the quality of the food we received. You can 2 courses for £27.50 or 3 for £33.85 making this the perfect place for a date, a great meal with friends or somewhere to impress the other half’s parents. (Yes, I will be taking The Gent’s parents here, which should tell you how much we loved it!) The menu changes every four weeks, so why not treat yourself more than once? I can tell you that we will definitely be going back there and would be very surprised by anyone who comes away and says they won’t return. It really was a delight to review Café du Marché, so thank you for a fabulous evening.

Small disclaimer: the photos were taken on an iPhone so you do not actually get a ball of fire on your table. It is, in fact, just a candle. Sorry to disappoint.
