Corrigans, Mayfair

I have been asked in the past why our reviews are often so positive, and I’d like to share the simple answer with you. We have enjoyed our experiences thus far. The Restaurants we visit are good. Some of them very good. And on occasion, they are wonderful.

Richard Corrigans latest restaurant, conveniently named Corrigans, fits perfectly into that wonderful category. Located on Upper Grosvenor Street in Mayfair, the location is perfect and the space itself is beautiful. Decor is interesting and contemporary; blue walls are complimented by feathered lampshades and beautiful lighting; textured wallpaper sits next to mirrors. It’s gorgeous (and of course you would expect nothing less from world renowned Designer Martin Brudnizki).

The service was also astonishingly good. We were greeted promptly and escorted straight to our table, despite being ten minutes early. Our servers introduced themselves, and then talked us through the specials and menu with expert knowledge, explaining exactly what each dish consisted of. And therein lay the only problem of the night. The dishes all consisted of a little piece of heaven. Just how exactly is one expected to choose from a menu like this?

Thankfully, our delightful server, Manuel (yes, really), was on hand to guide us through. He pointed out the signature dishes, talking me through the precise details and helping me reach my very difficult decision. Thank you Manuel, you may just be my new best friend.

The meal was started off with an exceptional amuse-bouche - a pairing of a chilled soup with a crab toast. The Boy took a bite and looked like he may cry with pleasure. It really was delicious. We were also served up some canapes…including a delicious olive in breaded Goats Cheese. Another complete success.

I opted for Ravioli of Suckling Pig with Roasted Lobster for my starter and the combination of the well seasoned pork, lobster and three sauces (including squid ink) drizzled on my plate was mind-blowing. He chose the Fried Duck Egg, Marinated Mushrooms and Acorn Fed Ham, which was delicious, if slightly too breakfast-like for me. Both portion sizes were ideal, if anything slightly larger than we expected.

I then moved on to another delight; Pan Roasted Cornish Scallops with Sweetcorn & Foie Gras with a side of Runner Beans. Sweet and moreish, the textures worked well together and if I hadn’t been in such polite surroundings, I may just have licked my plate. The Boy wentfor the lamb dish which consisted of lamb prepared three ways, which included a breaded kidney which was quite possibly the most delicious thing I have ever tried. He finished off his creamed spinach side dish in record time, so I can only assume that was marvellous too!

Now, I don’t usually go for dessert, but I had spotted the British and Irish Cheeses before I’d even finished my Starter and I wasn’t giving that up or anything. I am so pleased I didn’t – it can only be described as heaven on a cheese plate. Served with the options of plump, juicy raisins (in place of the traditional grapes), dried apricots and handmade oat and thyme biscuits, the selection is vast and delicious….and I speak from experience, as I tried most of it. The Boy helped me polish mine off alongside his delicious Chocolate Textures, which, if you’re a chocolate lover, you just HAVE to try. A work of art. Last but not least, we were brought some delicious petit-fours – although I was far too full to eat my share. However, I did sample the lemon tart…and it was an incredible way to finish. Divine.

Richard Corrigan already has 2 Michelin Stars, and with Corrigans, I can only guess that he’ll soon be awarded a third. I urge you to visit. Perfect.
