As you know, I am on a quest to get rid of my belly. Obviously the knee jerk reaction is to go to the gym, so I dusted off my membership card, dug out my trainers from the back of the wardrobe and trotted on down to the gym with a big 2litre bottle of Evian. When I got there, I cycled a bit, did some weights and went for a swim, with only the teeniest bit of sweat appearing. I felt good, I felt refreshed and I would urge everyone to become more active. However, if you are anything like me, even when you get to the gym you can be guilty of being a bit lazy. Come on, put your hand up if you’re one of those people who gives up at the first sign of resistance from their body?
On the other side of the coin, you might be one of those people who is incredibly motivated, runs or spins or cross trains for ages and sweats a lot. Let it be said that I applaud your dedication, but did you know that if you repeat the same form of excersise on a regular basis your body gets used to it? Some of you might think that is the idea, but after a while your body stops working as hard and therefore doesn’t build as much muscle. In fact, it begins to use the muscle for energy. This is why sprinters are muscley and long distance runners tend to be a little skinnier.
So the best way to keep yourself exercising in the most productive way is by switching up your routine. Make your body work in different ways, so at no point can you physically get used to the workout. A fantastic way to do this is to try the BoxFit class at Epic Kickboxing Gym, near Westbourne Park.
When I was offered a free trial, I jumped at the chance and was more than a little nervous to be told that Marco “the Epic Gym Master” Trainer would be taking the class, as I am definitely not fit enough to be in a master’s class. However, when I met him he was very welcoming and soon had me warming up – and sweating! Within minutes I was working out in varied ways, including beating my frustrations out on the punch bags. (For the record, he said I was a natural. Don’t mess with me!) He had us exhausted but continued to push us as far as we were willing to be pushed, which is the best of both worlds.
Epic Kickboxing Gym only opened in March this year, so the facilities are fantastically new and well maintained, including a rather large sparring ring. It has an amazing panoramic view (see below), making it a fantastically light place to work out and sweat towels are provided. Marco kept us on our feet, kept us working hard but never beyond what we were physically capable of. He specialises in working you 100% whatever your fitness level, so whether you’re an expert or a complete novice like me you will come away from his classes sweating and feeling fully worked. They teach BoxFit and Kickboxing with morning and evening classes, with the potential to have some during the day if the demand is great enough. I for one will definitely get myself on that waiting list.
Classes are £15 if you buy just one, but the more you buy the cheaper they become. For 15 classes it would cost you a healthy £150, which is just £10 per class. This has no membership fee, so if you don’t want to go every week you don’t have to, but class credits expire at the end of each quarter. If you decide you do want to go more than once a week then the membership option is the cheapest way to do it.
