Challenge 5 – Culture & Nightlife – Our results

OK, so this one was a whole lot of fun!

Despite being very behind schedule due to being very poorly sick and not being able to do much or the last few weeks…myself and my buddies ended up having a riot with this task. After initially making various plans that I wasn’t able to execute due to coughing fits and soaring temperatures (i.e. no-one wanted to play with me while I had the dreaded lurgy….) I thought I was bound to fail miserably, but after some smashing help from my fabulous blog crew, I came up with some absolutely cracking ideas….and think my smorgasbord of ideas is worth an honorable mention!

Fish Marketsframeb0e4f68346ac3d971014750a389b8788a8a81b40First up, I took inspiration from Emma, who told me about the fantastic Sydney Fish Markets, where people go to buy the freshest fish and to cook for themselves at home, or to eat fish and chips by the sea. OK, so I don’t live by an ocean and wasn’t well enough for a day trip…so off we went to Billingsgate to pick up some fabulous fishies…so we could have a good old Aussie cookout and put some shrimps on the Barbie, mate!  It was a bloody brilliant idea, and although I was a little tamer on the old amber nectar than usual (illness as some benefits – to my liver at least) we had a great day with good pals…and the sun even came out too. OK, so it wasn’t at the beach, but I think a garden in Egham worked just as well thank you very much!! We even tried to play a bit of opera in the background but as the beer started flowing and we couldn’t take any more (we’re not a very cultured lot…) it soon switched to some Kylie and Jason – ACE!!

frame200d47d9c49a21756239e1671e33c3346b46b49b(2)Afternoon TeaSecond, taking my lead from another fabulous twitter buddy…a good friend and I took afternoon tea at The Grove in Hertfordshire. OK, so its not quite the Tea Rooms in Sydney but it was as good as we were going to get, and it was absolutely delicious and a very pleasant and different afternoon. The Grove is an amazing setting and if you can’t get a view of glorious Aussie scenery, why not get one of the beautiful English countryside instead?

Last but not least – so many people I spoke to about Australia talked about dinners with friends, and watching the sport – so I thought I had to combine the 2! We ended up scrapping the idea of a dinner party after not being able to get hold of any proper Aussie ingredients locally…so we put the inflatable kangaroo back in the cupboard (yes, we really did get one….) and hopped on down to our local Aussie Bar (Yes, it was a walkabout, but I was ill and my options were limited!!) and watched some cricket (groan….), some “soccer” (yay!) ate some kangaroo , danced with hula loops round our necks and sunk a few genuine Australian beers for good measure!! Another good night with great mates, good sport and some pretty decent grub. Kangaroo isn’t half bad you know! (More pics of our Walkabout night to come once uploaded!!)

Heads chopped off to protect the innocent!!I liked this challenge a lot – and if only I had been well enough I would have completed the whole affair with a proper Aussie party, complete with full cliched Australian party kit – a surfer dress code, Aussie food, drinks and music – which I’m pretty sure would have been equally fabulous…

But thanks you 100oheads and Visit NSW, We had loads of fun because of you!!!

And a specal huge thanks to everyone for their fantastic ideas to date too. 5 challenges down, one to go!!
