So I’m going to say something that I fully expect to alienate the majority of you.
I like Frankie Cocozza.
Now. I don’t think he had the best voice of all the X-Factor contestants this year. Clearly not. But I do think he had personality. And his own style – like it or not. And lets be fair..the boy has more talent that most of those who are quick to criticise.
When we first met Frankie in the auditions, almost all of us loved him. He was cheeky. He had spark. He looked like he needed a good scrub, sure, but there was something about him that made us smile.
And then he got “produced”. The X-Factor team got their hands on him. The papers wrote about him. He was touted as “the bad boy” of the show. And at 18 – he started to believe his own hype.
Let me re-iterrate. He’s EIGHTEEN. He is a teenager, he’s out having fun, he is being encouraged to do so by people he respects and admires and he is making a tit of himself. OK, so he swore before 9pm. Most teenagers (and me) do. There have been clips of him shown every week with a drink in his hand at some club or another, which has been seen by some to be glamorising alcohol. Blame the shows Editors for putting that on the TV before the watershed, thank you very much. He doesn’t choose what to show every week. And the other contestants are out quite a lot too. EDITING.
Now, he’s been booted off the show for breaking a “golden rule”. If rumours (and they are, as far as I know, just rumours at this stage) are to be believed, that golden rule may have something to do with cocaine. I don’t know what the situation is, or if this is true, but regardless. Whilst I don’t approve of anyone sticking things up their nose & believe it needed to be dealt with, I think the whole thing has been handled disgracefully.
The Producers and Mentors on the X-Factor have a duty of care to the contestants, many of whom are still pretty much kids. They suck them up into this lifestyle, wind them up like little toys, watch them go then stand back, rubbing their hands in glee as they spin out of control and fall apart.
If they didn’t want Frankie to go out every night? Put a curfew on him. Certainly don’t send a camera crew out after him to film it and raise awareness on the next weeks show. Don’t build up someone to be something they’re not and then pretend it had nothing to do with you once it all goes wrong.
Did Frankie deserve his place in the competition? Yes. People were voting for him.
Is Frankie a bit of an irresponsible twat who needs to have a long hard look at himself? Yes. Clearly.
Are the shows Producers partly responsible for the mess he’s in right now? Unquestionably.
I liked the X-Factor once upon a time. Now I think it’s a bit of a joke. I feel sorry for Frankie and the hate/abuse he’s getting. He gave it a shot. Enough people liked him to vote him in week after week. He’s a a teenage boy who messed up a bit, but that should have been handled quietly, responsibly, and out of the public eye, before it got to this latest stage. He got it wrong. He’s 18, he’s got a lot to learn…and I think he’ll be learning a lot this week.
I hope this doesn’t mess up his life for too long. I don’t think he’s a bad kid, underneath the bravado.
