Review: Banana Tree, Soho

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be invited to the opening night of the newest in the Banana Tree chain, based on Wardour Street, Soho.

We were treated to Cocktails and a Tasting Menu selected by the Chef, all of which were lovely. However, after a friend visited on a Saturday lunchtime and advised me she wasn’t so impressed and that the restaurant was pretty quiet for the time of day, I was keen to see if they were as good as I’d initially thought, or if it was opening night luck…so decided to book and go again…

Fast forward to date night. (30, delicious, not usual type, we’ll see). I booked for 8pm on a Thursday and hoped that we’d have a good start to our night out. We weren’t disappointed.

As we arrived, there was a line at the door of people waiting to get tables. Great sign, and was really pleased we’d booked ahead. We were shown immediately to our corner table for two, which was nice as most of the restaurant is set up canteen style, with long, sharing tables. The restaurant was noisy, buzzing and the atmosphere was great. Brilliantly though, our waitress looked unflustered and took the time to recommend some cocktails (Dirty Thai Guys rock, by the way), and give us time to peruse the menu.

Being all datey and romantic (!) we ordered a few bits to share and listened to our lovely waitresses recommendations - which included the Steamed Dumplings to start, the Mamak Kambing Lamb Curry and as I’d loved it so much on my original visit, the Tamarind Spicy Aubergine (soft, flavoursome and decidedly moreish!).

The food was really enjoyable, we found the service faultless (although it has to be said my friend commented that it wasn’t so good when she visited at lunchtime…) and we had a brilliant night at Banana Tree. We took our time over our meal, and may have (definitely did) polished off a few more cocktails before heading off to Floridita across the road to carry on drinking. It was a great date venue; he loved it, I was pleased to have been back and I’d definitely recommend it for a thoroughly reasonable night out with friends or a date in Soho.

Let me know your thoughts if you visit!

(PS: Please excuse the lack of food photos. It was pretty. Just not as pretty as the boy)
