Review: Geales Fish Restaurant, Notting Hill

It’s a balmy Friday evening in Notting Hill. We’re hungry. There is only one option…Geales Fish Restaurant, located on Farmer Street, just a couple of minutes from Notting Hill Gate station.

The restaurant was established in 1939 but there is nothing old fashioned about it. Originally a posh fish and chip place, they had a major revamp of both the restaurant and the menu in 2007, and the result is a success. It’s a stylish space, and although the tables are quite close together, it feels fairly spacious. The doors open up fully at the front, giving an airy feel, and the staff are extremely welcoming.

The menu is not vast, but everything looked appealing. I opted for the lobster and chips (obvs), whilst my friend chose the Haddock. My lobster was tasty and the chips were fabulous…but it was ever-so slightly overcooked and a little bit tough, which was a shame. Not the best I’ve ever had, but certainly not the worst either. In comparison, the Haddock was absolutely outstanding – delicious, flaky and perfectly cooked, with a great batter. As usual, total food envy from me…

I really enjoyed our evening. We washed dinner down with a  gorgeous bottle of Sancerre and spent a while people-watching. The restaurant is quite intimate and diners mainly consisted of couples enjoying each others company, and the food.

As mentioned, the staff and service were excellent – friendly without being over-bearing, helpful and knowledgeable about the menu.

The one minor hitch with the lobster definitely wouldn’t put me off coming back to Geales, and I would visit again when in the area. Gorgeous, reasonably priced and friendly staff. What more could you want?
