We like Black & Blue. Our previous visit there was an absolute winner. So we were interested to see what the latest restaurant from the group compared, in terms of taste, service and atmosphere.
Black & Blue recently opened it’s latest establishment on the site of Picasso, the famous cafe on the Kings Road. To honour it’s predecessor, they decided to keep the name, but apart from that, everything is distinctly Black & Blue, with the majority of the dishes kept the same as the other branches.
The decor at Picasso is simple and classy. We walked past the bar to the restaurant section and took our seats at a spacious table. The space is light and airy, with the tables far spaced far enough apart to make it comfortable enough to chat without fear of being eavesdropped by your neighbours (a personal pet peeve). The booths are comfortable, with some interesting (or amusing if you’re childish like us”) bull-themed artwork adorning the walls. We were brought drinks immediately, and talked through the menu, including any omissions and the soup for the day.
The choices are always great at Black & Blue which is fabulous, but makes choosing somewhat tricky. Eventually, my friend and I decided to share starters, and went for the Scallops (unique to Picasso) and the Garlic Prawns – both of which were simply delicious. The Garlic Prawns are one of the signature dishes at Black & Blue and if you haven’t tried them before, I recommend you do so immediately. They’re divine.
For entrees, I was sorely tempted by the burger…but come on…this is Black & Blue – a steak is almost mandatory! I ended up choosing the Ribeye, cooked rare, which was tender and delicious. My companion tucked into the fillet, which he assures me was equally lovely. Both were topped with Fois Gras (available at a small extra cost) which was rich and luxurious, but we both agreed potentially unnecessary. The accompanying sauces (which come free) are more than good enough! The chips were nice enough – not quite as good as those I remember from my last Black & Blue visit, but they were polished off all the same.
I finished, predictably, with the cheesecake. I am a sucker for any cheesecake, but this one was particularly good. My friend tucked into the brownie, which was suitably decadent and would make any chocolate lover smile.
We had an absolutely lovely evening at Picasso. I have to say, the service throughout was spectacular. No request we made was too big or small, and everything was super-quick when needed, without being rushed. There were a few minor hiccups, such as the house salad, which we requested without nuts, coming incorrectly, but the issue was sorted within seconds and without fuss.
I think price-wise, as with all Black & Blues, Picasso offers good value for money. They source excellent ingredients, and their suppliers know the process of every item from farm to plate. A 3-course meal for 2 with wine will cost you approximately £45 per head, which is perfectly reasonable. It’s the perfect location for a date, or an evening with friends. We’d definitely visit Picasso on the Kings Road again!
