Summer in Fitzrovia is just lovely. Except when it forgets it’s Summer and decides to rain relentlessly. Which is what it did the evening we decided to sample the new Summer menu from Chez Gerard on Charlotte Street, which launches officially today.
However, the wetness didn’t dampen our spirits and my companion and I were looking forward to trying the latest offerings from the original restaurant in the Chez Gerard chain. The restaurant is decorated in traditional French Brasserie style, but feels modern, fresh and clean. It’s an unfussy and relaxed space, with artwork and mirrors adorning the walls, wooden floors and crisp white tablecloths, candles and flowers on the tables. It’s ideally suited for any occasion, from a girlie catch up over wine (we can vouch for this) to a business lunch or family treat.
My friend and I ordered up a bottle of the house wine (perfectly enjoyable) and took an age deciding what to choose, the menu all looked so appetising. She actually opted for the Baked Camembert (from the previous menu) to start, which oozed perfectly and was unctuously good. I happily tucked into the Coquilles Saint Jacques, which had perfectly cooked scallops and was delicious, although perhaps slightly under-seasoned for my pallet.
Mains were a mouth-wateringly scrumptious Rib-Eye Steak for my lovely companion, which was cooked to her exact requirements and made her very happy indeed. I opted for the Cotswold lamb, which was tender, juicy and absolutely delicious. Again, I came up with a slight seasoning issue but this may just be my tastebuds, rather than a fault. The accompaniments that came with both dishes were also really tasty, and the chips I stole from my friends plate were pretty damn good – and we all know there’s almost nothing better than a well cooked chip!
Now. When it comes to desserts, I’m not really a “pudding person”, but if there’s a lemon tart on the menu, I’m having it. And at Chez Gerard, there is a DELICIOUS lemon tart on offer – my absolute highlight of the meal. Zingy but not too tart, with lovely pastry, this was an absolute pleasure to eat. The Creme Brulee was apparently equally good – but I was far too stuffed to taste it by then.
We had a really great evening, with some quality dishes and great service – we felt very well looked after. For the prices charged (see the menu’s here) you get good portion sizes and apart from the afore-mentioned seasoning (minor) issue, we had no complaints at all. It’s certainly a place I’d recommend visiting (other locations listed here) and will be making the most of the Prix Fixe menu soon.
