Review: Hair Organics, Notting Hill

Lot’s of you lovely lot have been nice enough to comment on my new Twitter pic, which shows a newly blonde me, just in time for all this sunshine.

The weird thing is, although it looks like a big change, I’m naturally blonde. I got used to dying it dark about 5 years ago and have kind of stuck with it since, through habit more than love. So when the lovely people at Hair Organics invited me to try their Seaweed lightening system, that promises not to damage hair like bleach does, I thought it was the perfect time to go back to my roots (literally!).

Hair Organics is a great little independent boutique salon, right in the middle of trendy Notting Hill. It’s an intimate and relaxed space, unlike some of the sprawling salons I’ve visited recently, but it’s nicely decorated and the concept is a great one. They pride themselves on only using the safest and purest products on your hair, which they promise will leave it looking fabulous and feeling great, without the damage caused by the harsh chemicals used as standard by their competitors. Working closely with leading expert Daniel Field, the salon ensures all colours and treatments used are 100% ammonia free and made from the purest botanicals. This philosophy is carried right through their world too – from the teas they serve to the towels they use – everything is biodegradable/recyclable/natural, and generally just good!

I was looked after from start to finish by Rachel, who talked me through the processes she would be using and dealt with my mini freak out about my fear of too-short layers like a true professional (this was still in consultation stage. The woman is a saint). Rachel also explained that whilst we would of course be able to lighten my hair, it would not be sensible to try to go too blonde in one instance, as my hair had so much brown/red dye on it from previous dye jobs. Whilst this isn’t always what you want to hear, I love the fact she stuck to her guns – after all – she is the professional, and in this case, the customer was definitely NOT right!

Hair Organics is a really friendly place, and while I was there a few local shopkeepers came in for various cuts and treatments and were greeted like long lost family. The atmosphere was chatty and informal, the tea and biscuits were free-flowing and in some ways, it felt a bit like a coffee morning rather than a 3+ hour hair-do. I like that.

When the foils finally came out, there were a couple of things I noticed immediately. Of course, the first was the colour – a creamy. golden blonde that I couldn’t have been happier with – close to my natural shade, but better. The second was the condition of my hair once it had been blow dried – it felt incredible. Soft, shiny and smooth – not at all straw like which you can of course get after a full head of bleach highlights.

I visit many salons and find myself popping in to check out new ones all the time, but I can honestly say Hair Organics is a place I would happily return to for my colour anytime. Rachel was great and extremely knowledgeable about products, processes and strong enough to guide me against going too light or getting offended when I  ranted about previous hairdressers mistakes. I have waited a couple of weeks now to write about the experience as I wanted to see if there was any change in colour or issues after a few washes at home (which you can get after a new process) but I am pleased to say everything is still great – and the compliments keep coming!

If you care about your hair, the environment or both, I highly recommend Hair Organics next time you’re looking at having your hair coloured. I couldn’t be happier with the results – soft, shiny and bright hair. What more could a girl ask for?!
