Last week was definitely a week for Waterloo. Not only did we visit the Mandala Spa (review here) at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, but we also went along to the Waterloo Bar and Grill on Waterloo Road.
The restaurant recently received a complete makeover and now prides itself on being a modern British grill, which uses the best nationally sourced ingredients to bring customers quality food at a reasonable price.
We didn’t really know what to expect, having heard differing reviews about the restaurant, but the evening started well. We entered the modern restaurant and were immediately impressed by the decor (simple and chic), and were greeted by professional and friendly staff, who checked in our coats and guided us through to our table promptly.
The menu all looked appealing and I opted for the Tomato and Pepper soup to start, which was pleasant but unfortunately not anything remarkable. My mum, whose birthday it was, chose the Ham Hock salad, which looked fabulous but was quite bland – a real shame.
However, we didn’t write the restaurant off which is a great thing, as the meal got immediately better from there on in. The main courses were 100% better. I chose Fillet Steak, which I asked for medium/well done. They denied this request very politely and let me know that the chef would cook it as much as he could without ruining the fillet. This was great advice as it came out soft, succulent and delicious. Our waiter, Adrian, recommended the Lemon Sole for our other main and it was equally good – very happy indeed.
Last but by no means least came our desserts – without question the best bit of the meal. The chocolate brownie was rich, moist and delicious, and the sticky toffee pudding was melt in the mouth good, packed with dates, gooey and moreish. Nom.
This is a perfectly placed venue along the Waterloo Road, and a welcome change from the usual fast food joints aimed at commuters. Excellent for after work cocktails (there is a separate bar at the front of the venue which we have been told is bustling every night of the week) and although some dishes missed the mark slightly, on the whole we found the food to be worth the visit. The decor is beautiful and the staff? Friendly, courteous and efficient – just what you’d expect.
Would we return? Yes. If you’re in the Waterloo area – definitely drop by.
