Super Salon: Bloww

I don’t know about you, but I remember the hype that surrounded Bloww when the salon opened back in 2005 with Paul Merritt and Adee Phelan at the helm. Fresh from the success of “The Salon” on Channel 4, the boys helped open the huge super-salon and spa, just off Regents Street, and business boomed.

Since then, there have been a few changes at the salon (including the arrival and departure of Lee Stafford) but the concept remains the same – a great team of stylists and technicians bringing you the most up-to-date treatments and techniques in a fantastic space.

I have to say, I was impressed from the minute I walked through the doors. Bloww is a venue you could quite easily miss, tucked just off Regent Street on Regents Place, but when you enter the salon you’ll wonder how you ever walked past. It’s a vast building -spacious, modern and inviting, with a stylish and open reception/seating area; classic Takara Belmont styling chairs in the generous sections and a darkened, chilled out shampooing area (that I later found out was very easy to drift off in). Down the stairs, you’ll find yourself transported away from the hustle and bustle of hectic London life in the beautifully appointed Thai inspired spa. It really is quite unbelievable that such a peaceful space is just metres away from one of London’s busiest streets – you could get lost for hours down there (and I plan to).

I was lucky enough to have my hair appointment with Nick, the salon Manager, who discussed various options with me during my consultation. It had been so long since I trimmed my fringe that we decided to let it grow rather than chop it back in – and as the red had faded I thought it was about time I started to go back to my roots – BLONDE! Nick was great, advising me to make the transition slowly so as not to damage the hair with too much colour at once, so he added super-fine highlights throughout the top sections to start the lightening process – more can be added over the coming months to achieve the end result I want without drying out my locks too much.

One of the things I loved about Bloww was how friendly and chatty the staff were. Various people came over for a chat, to offer wine (that they then went out and bought especially as they’d run out) or bring me fresh magazines – nothing was too much trouble for anyone and the conversations weren’t your usual uncomfortable new hairdresser small talk type – these guys were all interesting and funny – which is handy when you’re spending a few hours in their company! Even the (H&S necessary and no fault of their own) fire drill was made fairly painless – we all had a bit of a giggle as we were ushered outside, complete with foils in my hair!

One of the things I judge a salon on is the quality of their shampoo/head massage, and Bloww certainly didn’t disappoint here. I was taken into the aforementioned room, which is almost cave-like with it’s ultra-low lighting, made comfortable and lathered, rinsed, conditioned, toned and massaged into a blissful state – it was heavenly.

With someone as experienced as Nick, the actual cut took no time at all. I liked the shape of my hair already so it was more of a tidy up job, getting rid of all those pesky split ends and thinning out some of the more bulky layers.

My favourite part of all though was the final stages of the cut and finish. I have long been wondering how to get loose but defined waves in my hair, and showed Nick a picture of Jessica Lowndes on the red carpet. He explained the easiest way would be to use a large barrelled curling tong, but as I don’t have one, he took the time to demonstrate the technique using products I know and the GHD’s I have at home. The end result was perfection and something I can (and consequently have) definitely do in the comfort of my own home.

I left Bloww feeling fantastic – not just because I loved my hair – but because I’d had a great afternoon too. For once, I didn’t feel like I had to get home and wash my hair straight away, but rather went straight out for a date (who said I looked lovely, by the way).

I’d definitely recommend Bloww and I plan to be back soon for a Brazillian Blow Dry and a bit more blondeness – and more importantly a good few hours at that beautiful spa…
