The Agitator at the Barfly. A-MAZING…

It was Thursday night and I was really keen to stay in. It had been a hard week after all. But I got a call from a reliable source telling me to trek across town to see an amazing band – so trek I did.

And my goodness, I’m glad I went.

The venue was the Barfly in Camden. The band was The Agitator. I had never heard of them, but it seems that they are something that you will all be hearing of soon. This band are awesome.

A three-piece, made up of the lead singer (Derek Meins), who quickly turned into a bit of an unlikely sex-symbol for me. A quirky frontman made up of skinny pants, braces, and dance moves from the 50′s. Doesn’t sound amazing does it? But my goodness, it is. This guy oozes style. His voice is incredible – and the songs he belts out are  both original and catchy. Plus, the lyrics actually mean something, which is nice is these days of pop crap.

Derek is backed up by two drummers (Robert Dylan Thomas and T-Train. Rob was in the original Maccabees line up, don’t you know). That’s it. No guitars. No backing singers. Just rhythm. They alternate from high speed rockabilly-punk inspired tracks, to slowed down, bluesy beats.

Every track had the crowd either jumping or swaying along. I can’t compare the sound to anything I’ve heard recently, but one thing I can say is that I loved it.

If you get a chance to see The Agitator in an intimate venue near you soon, do. Great to see a band like this before they get huge.

Great piece – had no idea about this group before reading it, but the two-drummers concept is always interesting – I think of Adam and the Ants, and Rialto. Looking forward to seeing them for myself!
