Review: The Masons Arms, NW10

If you happen to have moved house in the last few years, you will have more than likely experienced the horror of being stuck without broadband for a couple of weeks during the transition.

This is bad enough when you want to browse the net for personal purposes. You may feel a bit cut off from the world. But when you run an internet business from home – this is really, really not good.

Unfortunately, being the littlest hobo that I am, I tend to move quite a lot. This has made me an expert at sniffing out friendly local establishments, which offer free Wifi in exchange for your custom, and occasionally even give you a warm welcome when you’ve been there once or twice.

This week, however, I have stumbled across a venue that offers this, plus a lot more. A short distance to my current abode is the Masons Arms in NW10 – a newly refurbished gastro-pub opposite Kensal Green station.

Not only is the pub a lovely place to base yourself throughout the day, they are dog-friendly (within reason), which is fantastic for someone like me who feels guilty for leaving the pup-dog at home for too long. The decor is also warm and welcoming, with sparkling chandeliers contrasting against the mismatched furniture making it a great place to be when it’s raining and grotty outside. The food here is also lovely. Yesterday I opted for the beer battered fish and chips for lunch which was nice – but today’s steak sandwich with horseradish was absolutely delicious. The menu is well thought out with something for everyone, and they have bar Tapas available if you prefer smaller options. Plus – they have a great selection of wines and make an awesome cup of coffee, which makes the whole experience simply perfect in my book.

As I write the final stages of the outside space are being renovated and will include zoned areas, including space for sports fans to watch the big games and a dedicated kitchen with rotisserie, perfect for private parties. The whole area is heated so while it will be ideal in the Summer months, it will be nice and cosy until then too.

Upstairs there is a dedicated function space stuffed with chesterfield sofas that can be hired for private functions, and is also where sporting events are shown on the giant screens that adorn the walls. This keeps the downstairs area free for those who prefer to enjoy the great menu in peace.

The bar hosts regular events – such as the quiz night on Tuesdays and a party, complete with resident DJ’s every Friday night. I will be checking this out and reporting back soon!

My favourite thing about the Masons Arms? The staff. I have been made to feel like a long lost friend and Doogal has been welcomed with open arms. It’s a great little home from home and I’m looking forward to checking out the outdoor area when it opens over the next couple of weeks.
