The longer version:
Can’t say that I wasn’t dubious. They call themselves “The Secret Garden of the City”. I mean seriously. Really? As I am on a two month no alcohol, no cake, no sugar, no fun kind of mission and feeling very blue I decided that it was time to take a break and go have a treat.
Friends have been talking about The Folly for a while now. They all work in the city and according to their facebook updates, they end up there most nights. Obviously Nosy Parker (me) wanted to find out what on earth they are going on about. Quick call to book a table and the following night we were off.
I always forget how tall The Monument is as we came out the tube. A short 90second skip to the restaurant (made a mental note as no wine in 4 weeks could result to a state of “hammered” after tasting the wine) and we have arrived. The first impression was “WTF?”, but in the best possible way. It’s like you have entered a different world. You are hit with music, a great buzz from all the people (Tuesday night and heaving) and the smile of the gorgeous blonde at the door. Thank god we booked as without it we would have been waiting for a while.
Once seated you start to really take the place in. The restaurant is homely, a mansion size homely, but homely none-the-less. Odd tables and chairs, cabinets stuffed with ornaments, terracotta pots as light fittings, a pot of basil on the table and so forth. It’s a rich surrounding and you are taken back a little. The attention to detail that has gone into decorating is incredible. I visit the little queens room before we order and it’s like I’ve stepped into Finland. That’s all I will say on the decor, to find out more go check it out. The menu is great, with an amazing selection of food, from the good old “honest” dishes to the little more creative. We had prawn lollipops and a spanish flat bread to start, nom nom. All washed down with English Rose, who knew!! It was lovely and I was indeed spinning after half a glass.
For mains we had the specials, fish and veal and I must say they were both great. Seriously. Our waiters Isabel and Eugenija were very friendly and were the icing on my cake. Isabel suggested truffled chips, and it seems Isabel knows her stuff. They left me licking my fingers for hours!
The short version:
The Folly is a vibey, buzzy restaurant where you get served great food with a smile. Go.
