Our thoughts on Polpo? Just Perfect…

I have long been hearing good things about Polpo Soho.

Twitter has been abuzz with good reports for months. Friends have raved about both the food and the laid back atmosphere. So why it took me quite so long to visit, I’ll never know.

Last Saturday however, when looking for a venue for a girlie lunch with a group of friends both old and new, it seemed the obvious choice. A brief conversation later we were booked in and looking foward to visiting.

We weren’t disappointed. The idea of Polpo is a great one. A smallish space, serving small plates of Italian cuisine in a relaxed and friendly setting. They welcomed us warmly and showed tremendous patience with the 5 lovely ladies who were thoroughly enjoying a glass of lunchtime wine and bickering over whether Calves liver was a good choice or not (I won. It was.) We each chose one or two dishes and shared them out between the group. As with Tapas, the plates arrive as and when they’re ready rather that at one time, and considering we were a mixed bunch omnivores (see previous liver statement), a pescetarian and a veggie, this worked out to be surprisingly easy. Among the fennel salad, crochettas, meatballs, salad, bread options and delicious chocolate pot desserts, we all did rather well.

It isn’t only the food that’s a delight at Polpo. The staff we experienced on the day were all exceptional. Polite, efficient, patient, and it has to be said – super cool – with outfits to die for. It really is no surprise that the restaurant is run so well, seeing as the owner is Russell Norman, who used to work for Caprice Holdings at restaurants like The Ivy and Scott’s. An excellent training field indeed.

Price-wise, it’s an absolute bargain. Service? Spot on. Food? Delicious.

Not a bad word to say about the place. Get down there as soon as you can and see for yourself.
