I have known to be rubbish when it comes to my hair. I straighten it too much, I use the wrong products, I don’t have it trimmed enough. I get lazy.
As you may recall though, a good few months ago I raved about the haircut I received from Michael Barnes at his self-named salon in Soho. It was incredible. I received compliments wherever I went. It made me feel confident, framed my face perfectly and I loved it. So much so, that I was reluctant to have it even trimmed afterwards, in case it lost that shape I had loved so much.
But, fairly obviously, it did lose that shape, because it did what hair generally does. It grew. So last week it was time to face the reality of being a human, and book in to have it cut.
Luckily for me I had been invited in to experience the RUSH salon at Earls Court, after we wrote about the fabulous Blow Dry Emma received from their City branch last month. After a brief chat with my stylist, Joe, I decided I trusted him enough to let him have a bit of a free reign over what we would do, and discussed both cut and colour options with him. Thankfully, he understood my desire to keep the length of my hair roughly the same (am still trying to grow it!) and he also agreed the shape was a good one, so cut wise we kept it fairly simple – just re-shaping and thinning out my layers. Colourwise though? Bit of a different story. We decided that seeing it is winter and gloomy and you only live once, I should ditch the standard chocolate brown and opt for a rich copper red instead. Awesome.
The salon at RUSH Earls Court is lovely. It’s a good size – you’re not squashed up to the person next to you and they offer a great selection of drinks, magazines and snacks while you get pampered. The staff are also some of the best I’ve experienced recently. Friendly without being over-familiar, efficient, knowledgable and in Joe’s case, funny too. Everything from the welcome I received at the front door, to the hair wash/head massage, to the cut and colour were all a pleasure.
At one point, while my hair was drying, I must admit to having a slight panic attack as I saw my new colour. Not because I didn’t know it was going to be brighter than usual – but because from where I was sitting, it looked bright orange at the root and dark auburn at the ends! This would not have been ideal. However Joe dealt with this mild outburst professionally, calmly and with patience, explaining that I did in fact have a spotlight directed right ont the top of my head, making the colour appear much brighter. I am pleased to say he was totally correct – the color is even and perfect (I love it actually) but it is nice to know he reacted so well in the face of a potential complaint!
Price-wise, RUSH are very reasonable compared to some other London salons, and often have excellent deals that you can make the most of by visiting their website or checking out our London for Less page.
If you choose to visit the Earls Court salon (RUSH have around 20 locations in London) do make sure you ask for Joe. I recommend his skills highly!
