Restaurant Review: Brasserie Joel

I don’t know of that many good restaurants in Waterloo.

I might be missing out on some absolute gems, I don’t know, but I’m certainly not aware of many. So when we were invited in to review Brasserie Joël at Park Plaza Westminster Bridge, I was intrigued as to what I would find.

Some hotel restaurants are remarkable. Some are very ordinary. Brasserie Joël is definitely closer to the former. As you sweep up the escalators in the grand entrance way of the hotel and step into the modern restaurant, you’re already expecting something good. When you are seated quickly and introduced to your waiter for the evening, your expectations don’t sink. And when you ask for recommendations from the menu of tasty looking dishes and that waiter rattles off information with passion, you start to get a little excited.

I started with the Chicken Liver Parfait, which was delicious although rather runny, and followed that with the Veal Sweetbreads, which was one of the best dishes I have eaten in recent months. My companion opted for the Tuna tartare, which we both loved, followed by the beef which arrived cooked to perfection. We were both really happy with our choices, and especially loved that Thomas, our waiter, helped to advise us and recommended the perfect wines to go with our dishes.

My only real complaints (and they are minor) are that the hostess who greeted us was a little rude when we arrived, which I don’t really expect, and the venue itself is so large that it feels a little cold (despite the blood red walls) – but I guess that’s just the feel of a restaurant in such a big hotel.

The good really did outweigh the bad though. Brasserie Joël has been created by award-winning chef Joël Antunes, who earned a Michelin star at Les Saveurs in the 90′s.  The standard of the food really is excellent, and as mentioned, Thomas our Waiter was exceptional too so it’s definitely a great place to visit when you’re in the area.

The decor to the place certainly looks amazing and your review suggests the food was quite good too! Would definitely love to try it out even though the service is slightly rude, could possibly be a bad day for the hostess. Does it get busy? Wondering if they reserve over the phone or online through websites like Book a table? Would love the convenience of not waiting!
