Food & Drink: Rick’s Cafe, Tooting

Sometimes, you find one of those hidden gems that you don’t want to shout about too loudly, because you’re scared that once everyone else knows about them, they’ll lose a teeny slice of their magic. Tonight I found one of those, but you know what? I feel compelled to share.

The place in question was Ricks Cafe, in the very unglamorous Tooting Broadway area. In fact, the location couldn’t be less fancy – hidden away in between the pound shops and general grottiness  of Mitcham Road, Rick’s is small, unassuming and to be honest, a little bit tatty from the outside. You could easily be forgiven for thinking it was a greasy spoon. But it’s nothing of the sort.

Inside, you see, its a different story altogether. The restaurant is tiny, but has the most homely feel of anywhere I’ve been lately. Small wooden tables coupled with mis-matched wooden chairs; London themed modern art on the walls; huge vases of flowers; candelabras resting in huge bowls of used, wax covered corks. Its cool.

The menu is also great – in a quality over quantity sense. There are just a handful of choices when it comes to starters, mains and desserts, which indicates that Ricks know what they want to achieve and will use the best ingredients to get them there.

I opted for pork terrine with onion jam to start, followed by 250g steak with real chips and wok fried spinach to follow. It was delicious. The terrine was packed with flavour, and the steak melted in my mouth. My companion went for more Surf than Turf; potted shrimps, followed by seared fillets of Sea Bass. He assures me it was fantastic.

My favourite thing of all was the service. The owner (unsurprisingly called…well…Rick) looked after us brilliantly and took real care in the way the meal was presented. Nice to see someone take such pride in their establishment.

Ricks isn’t cheap, but it certainly isn’t going to break the bank either. If you want somewhere intimate and homely, and more importantly, with good food, head to deepest darkest Tooting and enjoy Rick’s Cafe.
