The English Pig…

Last week I found myself at the opening of The English Pig, a new restaurant in Barbican completely devoted to pork dishes and great British food. The opening began at 5pm and by the time we arrived at 7pm the place was bustling. At the door each guest was given two raffle tickets that could be exchanged for drinks of their choice. As we were in a restaurant called the English Pig, a nice bottle of Aspall Suffolk Cyder seemed the most appropriate choice. This came served in a classic beer mug, which gave the feel of drinking at a bar in the countryside rather than one surrounded by office blocks in central London.

I was soon on to my second raffle ticket, this time ordering a glass of English white wine. As soon as my partner took a sip he commented on how much it tasted like bananas. I had to agree with him but strangely this made the wine even more refreshing than usual.

We settled ourselves down onto one of the comfy leather benches and admired the décor. The wooden floors and low-lighting provided a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it just right for catching up with friends. In keeping with the theme, every wall is adorned with various pictures of saddleback pigs. The restaurant prides itself on knowing the exact movement of its pigs from field to plate ensuring that the meat it’s serving is nothing less than excellent.

Although they weren’t serving meals on opening night, waitresses were circulating with plates of canapés. My boyfriend and I soon found ourselves completely addicted to the spoons of roast pork, crackling and apple and vanilla jam. This is the canapé version of the owner, Johnie’s, signature dish – a 21-hour slow roasted pork belly with the most crispy crackling imaginable. At one point, I found myself sucking the spoon dry as I didn’t want to waste a spot of the delicious apple and vanilla jam. I’m definitely going back to try the dish in full, and when I return I’ll be having the rhubarb and custard for dessert – I’ve got it all planned!
