If, like me, you’re a bit guilty of hanging around the same old Central London haunts, you’ll know how exciting it can be when you come across somewhere further out that is new, refreshing and a welcome change. I’m therefore extremely grateful to JJ, our lovely editor, for pointing me in the direction of the Tram and Social – a beautifully eclectic, wonderfully decorated pub situated near Tooting Broadway tube station.
If you imagine a fantastic warehouse space, draped outside with strings of lights and furnished inside with an odd mish-mash of old furniture, vintage wallpaper, ornate mirrors and some of your granny’s favourite ornaments then you might begin to get an idea of what this pub looks like. It’s the sort of pub that you might expect to find somewhere self-consciously hip like Shoreditch, but in my mind the fact that it’s located in Tooting makes it even more attractive – it’s the perfect place to enjoy good music and a drink that’s not overpriced, with none of the pretentiousness that you might expect elsewhere.
We kicked back on some of the old sofas (Paul a little too hard – the corner of the sofa collapsed under him) and stayed there for the whole of the afternoon, leafing through the paper, chatting and drinking. There is an impressive cocktail menu for those like me who are always wondering where the next caipirinha will come from (the caipirinhas, incidentally, are very good, but make sure to also try the strong but fabulous Detroit Martini), and some interesting beers for beer lovers to sample. Sadly the pub doesn’t serve much in the way of food (although they do do sausage rolls, which we discovered are pretty moreish). Nearby sister pub The Antelope serves up a pretty tasty lunch, so if you want to make a Sunday of it have a bite to eat there then wander over to the Tram for cocktails and crosswords.
Also worth keeping an eye out for are the Tram’s jumble sales, which apparently take place once a month and are a good place to pick up a bargain or two.
So you heard it here first: Tooting is the new place to go. Just make sure you don’t sit on the sofa too hard.
