Hair style is the final tip-off whether or not a woman really knows herself. ~Hubert de Givenchy, Vogue, July 1985
Finding the right hair-stylist for you is bloody difficult. That elusive expert who knows exactly what length will suit you, which colours would look best, the cut that will make your cheekbones more striking or help disguise those few extra pounds.
In short, the right hairdresser is worth their weight in gold.
And until last week, I was still looking. I have visited some OK stylists. I have had some highly technical, precise cuts, but never thought anyone had ever really listened to what I want…rather they’d just snipped away creating a masterpiece in their own eyes.
But then I met Jason at Lisa Shepherd’s new(ish) salon on Mortimer Street. Firstly, he understood my need for an ice cold glass of wine after a horrible day, which was a good start. Second, he offered crisps. And thirdly, he did a bloody amazing job on my hair, which is, after all, why you’d go back.
I genuinely didn’t know what I wanted. I knew (after growing my hair for a year, numerous disasters in the past and a brief love affair with extensions) that I didn’t want to go short, but I also knew that my ends were a disgrace, the colour was dull and I needed an overhaul.
Jason patiently listened to me, suggested a couple of colours and explained exactly how much would need to come off to make my hair appear healthy again. He agreed that my suggestion of red would work on my skin tone, but suggested waiting for autumn to make that kind of change, so we settled on some carefully placed highlights to make my hair reflect the light and shine.
We also discussed some top tips to get the style I wanted, explained how to best created looses curls and then, I drank another rather scrummy glass of wine. Well, why not?!
The end result was ace, I couldn’t be happier. It’s not a drastic change but is noticeable, and suits my features. I would highly recommend the salon – it’s a great space full of colourful modern touches and confident stylists who really know what they’re doing. Best of all, despite being a premium outlet, they’re less expensive than some of the other London salons you may visit.
Top marks from me!
