I am not the world’s greatest expert on Shakespeare, but I do know a good play when I see one. And last Thursday, at the Blue Elephant Theatre in Camberwell, I most definitely saw one.
Othello, if you don’t know, is a story of love, racism, jealousy and betrayal; we watch as our main characters develop and then unfurl in front of our eyes. Although the original text was written in approximately 1603, many of the themes are still relevant to society today.
From the opening scene of last nights production, I had goosebumps. From the outset I was drawn into the intensity of the story that was unfolding in front of me. I found myself completely involved with the characters, unable to take my eyes from the Actors who took centre stage. The entire cast was sensational, with Alec Parkinson’s Othello being of particular note.
The production itself is extraordinary and far removed from traditional Shakespeare plays. The costumes and theming have been brought forward to the 1940′s, whilst the original language remains. Director Ricky Dukes uses text, movement and music to bring the scenes to life – cutting the original text to include only the necessary parts of the plot, ensuring the story flows with intensity and purpose. The ensemble cast are present at almost every point, creating atmosphere with subtle actions from the sidelines without detracting from the main characters. It’s beautifully done.
I was incredibly impressed with such a slick performance on the first official night. A huge well done to the Lazarus Theatre Company and everybody involved.
