Drink: The Ice Bar

If you haven’t heard about The Absolut Ice Bar and its amazing restaurant, Below Zero – I’m convinced you’ve been living in a cave.

It’s one of those places that does exactly what it says on the tin. I mean, it’s a bar, made of ice, so the title couldn’t be anymore accurate. And it couldn’t be much cooler…

However, there’s more to this venue than freezing temperatures and novelty value. Alongside the infamous Ice Bar, there is a cocktail lounge and downstairs, a fabulous restaurant serving up some delicious food at incredibly reasonable prices for central London.

The Ice Bar itself is a treasure, made from the purest ice flown in from Northern Sweden, and kept at a constant temperature of -5 degrees. You won’t freeze your bits off though, the lovely staff will wrap you up in a funky thermal cape with a hood to keep you warm(ish). You book a 40 minute time slot, during which time you drink gorgeous cocktails straight from glasses made of ice…and get to experience the ever changing iced interior; to keep it fresh the owners completely redesign the place every 6 months so you get to see something new & impressive if you return.

Once your 40 minute time slot is up, you can either move into the (non-frozen) main cocktail area, or head downstairs for a top notch dinner. One thing is imperitive though – you cannot leave without trying the apple and blackberry crumble cocktail. Divine.

Personally I love this place, and it’s always one of my first choices when I’m organising a party or having friends from outside London come to visit. No-ones ever been disappointed yet!

I like the Ice Bar, but it’s a bit; ‘been there, done that, got the T-shirt’

I think if it was JUST the Ice Bar that’d be the case…but the fact you have a completely seperate bar with good cocktails and the restaurant downstairs means for me, it doesn’t get old. I can’t magine going into the freezy bit every week, but I think the venue as a whole is a cracker!

I find the Ice Bar, well, stale, and very much agree with Andrew. I went once, and was not overly impressed – like I said, it was a gimmick. I even tried to time my visit and went in the summer to appreciate the cool on a hot day. I’d rather save my pennies and head to the original Ice Hotel up north, frankly. Although I bet once I have been there I will also say that it is just a gimmick too. Give me a nice cocktail bar with good atmosphere, and keep the gimmicks. Or as you say, save them for tourists.

I totally appreciate that…but as I say…there IS a cocktail bar there with amazing cocktails and a great atmosphere, that’s completely seperate to the ice bar but in the same venue…so consequently you can avoid the ‘gimmick’ of you want and just enjoy brill cocktails in a normal environment that has a great atmosphere. In my opinion (and we all have one!) I like a venue that gives you 3 options…the ice bar…the cocktail lounge and the restaurant…all under one roof. And if you’ve ONLY gone to the ice bar, maybe you’re missing a trick by not spending time in the other 2!
